Children being left at home prior to school and/or returning home from school to an empty
house for several unsupervised hours is a troubling phenomenon that is experiencing tremendous
growth throughout American Society, as well as communities in the Delaware Valley.
According to a study by the Southeastern Pennsylvania School-Age Child Care Project, estimates
show that from 60,000 to 100,000 school age children are left unsupervised for extended periods of
time and even a greater number left unsupervised for entire days during summer months.
For many children this is a frightening experience, for others it presents a challenge of
independence, and yet for some, the innocent, unsuspecting, and curious child, it poses many inherent
risks. As shown by research study after research study, these inherent risks include loneliness,
anxiety, experimentation with drugs and alcohol, and becoming involved in dangerous situations in
the home (i.e. Playing with matches, cooking, using power equipment without adult supervision).
In addition, work surveys have shown that work efficiency of parents drops during these hours.
The KidsCare "PM" and KidsCare "AM" programs have been designed to provide parents and children
with a reasonable and affordable option to this situation. An option that can be used until the
child has attained the level of maturity, self-reliance, and responsibility needed for him/her to
adequately and safely function within the unsupervised situation.
KidsCare "PM" and KidsCare "AM" have been designed to be a natural extension of the child’s
regular school day. They are special programs for a very special group of children!
KidsCare programs run throughout the regular Pennridge school year. Parents have several
enrollment options-- KidsCare "AM", KidsCare "PM", KidsCare "AM/PM". The KidsCare "Day-Off"
program is available on specified days in order to provide coverage
for when schools are closed. Please do not hesitate to call
the KidsCare office at 215-230-3445 for more information!
